SUGAR SMART Isle of Wight is a new initiative that invites you to take a leading role to raise awareness of hidden sugars in our diet. Will your business  help?

The Isle of Wight Council is working in partnership with the IOW NHS Trust, leisure services, IW Chamber of Commerce, IOW Clinical Commissioning Group and other organisations to help people to identify how much sugar is in the food they eat.

Can you encourage your workforce to take small steps towards reducing sugar consumption by offering healthier food and drink in staff shops, vending machines or swapping the biscuit tin with fruit? This initiative coincides with the soft drink sugar tax launched on April 6, based on total sugar content, on drinks with more than 5g / 100ml and a higher levy for drinks with 8g / 100ml.

The recommended maximum intake of added sugar per day for 11 years and over is 30g (seven sugar cubes). Diets high in sugar can contribute to obesity and tooth decay. On the Island, a third of children aged 10/11 years are overweight or obese, rising to two-thirds by adulthood.
