IW Council leader Dave Stewart is reminding business people of the benefits of Chamber Health workplace health checks. In 2017 the Chamber Health team screened 1,000 Island employees at around 90 businesses. Of those screened, 63% had a BMI over 25 which is considered overweight and 100 people were referred to their GP as a direct result of the screening and almost 200 were referred to the Well Being Service. It’s been a welcome wake-up call for many employees and Dave Stewart is urging staff to take advantage of the free NHS health checks provided by Chamber Health in 2018.
“A healthy Island is a happy Island,” Dave says. “For business people particularly, who are working hard and doing long hours, managing your health is a key ingredient. It gives you the stamina to run your business and be able to work hard. I would urge all business people to get a health check and make sure you’re on top of your personal health. Without your health you can’t have anything. The local authority is a big employer and when we lose people for health reasons it’s always a challenge. We want to have a healthy and happy workforce and we must do what we can as employers but people must take their own responsibility too.”
