East Cowes based aerospace composites manufacturer CTAL is making sure that staff are healthy and happy, with the support of the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce’s Healthy Well-being coordinators. More than half of CTAL’s staff have taken part in voluntary health-checks, funded by their employer. The company, based at GKN in East Cowes, was originally established as a joint venture between Rolls Royce and GKN but is now solely owned by Rolls Royce since 2013.

“It’s been a huge success,” says John McGregor, CTAL’s Health and Safety officer. “The presentation that the Chamber Health team delivered was very informative and well received. The Chamber team are fantastic and our health check sessions are now fully booked up. Everyone has been very positive. There’s a great sense of camaraderie here at CTAL and people are now going away and having conversations about things like BMI and cholesterol.

“Health is top of the agenda for our staff. A healthy worker is usually a happy and a more productive worker. As a company we’re keen to promote well-being and resilience. We try and encourage people not to sit down too much. We’ve launched initiatives like walking meetings, rearranging tables so that staff can stand at their laptops. Because we work in composites we also put our staff through regular eye and lung health-checks too. We want to make sure that our staff are healthy.”
