A new theatre shop is stocking up the shelves with the help of a loan from the Isle of Wight Lottery.
Theatre Mania was established two months ago by Peter Arnott and his family, to supply around 20 different amateur theatre companies on the island.
However, since opening, Mr Arnott has discovered there is a big demand for dance and ballet clothing and shoes, too.
“The island’s only theatrical supplies shop closed some time ago, and I wanted to plug the gap,” he said. “The response has been very encouraging, but I needed the Lottery loan to help get this off the ground – particularly in building up some stock. Dance wear is particularly popular, and I will soon be qualified to fit ballet point shoes, which will make me the only one on the island.”
Mr Arnott, who is also buildings manager for the Cowes Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society, gave up his job as a lorry driver to set up the shop in High Street, Newport, initially selling make up, hair and costume accessories and theatre memorabilia.
The Isle of Wight Lottery – a division of the island’s Chamber of Commerce – operates on a non-profit basis, and all proceeds are directed into a loan fund. Loan applications are assessed by an investment panel and are provided interest free to start-up and expanding island businesses.
Since its launch in 2001, the Lottery has paid out about £900,000 in prizes to 900 people, and issued loans to more than 50 companies, helping to create about 130 jobs. The IW Lottery also supports the Start up Business Training programme, supporting over 500 local people entering self employment.
