Island law firm Eldridges has embraced change throughout its 180 year history. In 2013 it is managed by four partners, who have steered the business through some of the toughest times it has ever known, including the national economic recession, the retirement of several partners, the introduction of a new IT system, and recruitment of new staff – not to mention the opening of up legal services to competition.
Senior partner Sandie Gubbins said: “Yes, it has been a tough time. The retirements meant we lost a lot of experience, of course, and the arrival of the recession couldn’t have been timed any better if someone was planning to test us! But we have responded, and we would like to think that – although we are one of the oldest firms on the Island – we are not afraid of change. The end result is that we have streamlined the business, reducing staff as painlessly as possible, and invested in improved IT systems and marketing.”
